“…the roots…”

Allaah says (meaning);

“He sends down water (rain) from the sky, and the valleys flow according to their measure,

but the flood bears away the foam that mounts up to the surface…”

This verse implies the example of rain falling from the sky. Allaah likens revelation which He sent down for the life of hearts to rain which He brings down from the sky. As for hearts carrying revelation, Allaah likens them to valleys carrying a torrent. A big heart makes room for a lot of knowledge, just as a wide valley makes space for much water. However, a small heart makes room for little knowledge, just as a small valley makes room for little water. So, hearts carry knowledge according to their capacity, too.

Valleys and streams of torrents contain foam, froth and the likes. Torrent carries them till they float to the surface of water as rising overlapping bubbles. Beneath them is fresh, pure water that brings life to the earth. So, the valley throws away such froth towards both of its sides till they disappear. After that remains water that is under foam by which Allaah irrigates the earth and revives people, all places, plants, and animals. The foam is cast-off and thrown away on the verge of the valley, thus are knowledge and belief which Allaah puts into the hearts which carried them. Because knowledge and belief mixes with the hearts, they were confused and stirred up by the foam of sensual pleasures and falsehood. This foam floats upwards while knowledge, belief, guidance remain in the bottom of the heart as the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said; “Belief settles in the roots of the hearts of men (faithful believers).”

{Narrated by al Bukhaari}

Foam and froth go discarded and vanish little by little until they disappear wholly, while beneficial knowledge and pure belief settle in the root of the heart.
